We recognize that goals are important for parents and kids, so the screen time app features the ability to set goals for each kid. Parents can determine how many timely returns to The Den are appropriate for a given goal. This reward system provides positive reinforcement around device usage that eventually becomes routine. And routines become habit.

Based on your kid’s schedule, you can set up sessions, which are windows of time during which they can use their device. Within each session, parents can set a maximum allowable screen time. If a child tries to access a device during an allowable time, simply by pressing the TechDen bear icon, the doors of The Den will open. If a similar attempt is made during a non-scheduled time, the doors of The Den will remain closed and locked.
TechDen works on a system that requires the device to be returned back to The Den. This lets kids establish a predictable routine, yet still have some flexibility. And routines that are easy to follow can eventually become habits.
Kids get regular notifications on their device counting down how much time they have left before it’s time to return their device to The Den. Studies show kids respond better to predictable notifications rather than the sudden “two-minute warning” parents give at arbitrary times, which often catch kids off guard. If a child doesn’t return a device within 5 minutes of a predetermined time, a notification is sent to the parent app. This serves as a prompt for the parent to have a constructive conversation with their kid about why the device wasn’t returned.

The TechDen app also provides parents with useful information in real time. Parents can check in with the app at any time to see whether device is in use or stored in The Den, how much time remains on a device in use, and progress toward goals.
Like the parent app, TechDen Jr connects to The Den. The TechDen Jr app recognizes the parent settings, and applies them to the kid’s device.
Kids are able to view schedules, check how much time remains on a device, see if they’re meeting goals, and even request more time. If a child requests more time, a real-time notification is sent to the parent via the TechDen app. The parent can accept or decline the kid’s request for more device time with a single tap.
The TechDen Jr app sends notifications when a session has 10 minutes and 5 minutes remaining, and when it’s time to return the device to The Den. If a child doesn’t return a device within 5 minutes of a scheduled time, a notification is sent to the parent via the TechDen app.
Kids can track progress toward the goals and rewards they’ve established with the support of their parents. This provides positive reinforcement for healthy habits and promotes a balanced relationship with technology.
